G250 Gateway

This is a powerful branch communication solution that packs an IP telephony gateway, an advanced IP WAN router, and a high-performance LAN switch into a compact, 2U high 19" rack mount unit. The G250 Gateway extends the enterprise communications capabilities in the headquarters location out to a branch location and is ideally suited for branch locations needing from 2 to 12 extensions. The system gains its functionality from a centralized Avaya Media Server running Avaya Communication Manager, but has several survivability options that allow communications to continue operating even if the connection to the main server is lost for any reason.

An advanced TDM/IP architecture provides seamless connectivity and communications between a wide variety of analog, digital, H.323, and SIP-based IP telephony devices and applications. To enhance security, the G250 can secure VoIP media streams using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), approved for use by U.S. Government agencies to protect sensitive information.

The Avaya G250 also functions as an edge router to support the consolidation of voice and data traffic over an IP network. Optional IP WAN routing media modules add support for PPP/Frame Relay connectivity over E1/T1 or Universal Serial Port (USP) interfaces. The G250 media gateway can also connect to an external WAN device via a fixed 10/100 Ethernet WAN router port, which supports traffic shaping to match data transfer rates with available WAN bandwidth.

Benefits
  • Headquarters Communications Extended to the Branch: The G250 allows enterprises to extend their enterprise communications applications out to their branch office locations to facilitate productivity and collaboration at the branch offices.
  • Communications Continuity: The gateway provides branch office users with a highly resilient system that continues to provide communications capability even if the connection between the office and primary headquarters is lost.
  • Converged All-in-One Unit: The G250 integrates telephony, routing, and data switching into one box, reducing the overhead and complexity of managing disparate gateways, routers, and switches.
  • Centralized Applications Management: The resources required to manage branch communications are significantly reduced as the gateway extends a single centralized set of communications applications to the branch.
  • Automatic Re-connect: The gateway can be administered to automatically reconnect to the primary media gateway controller when available if after going into a backup mode.
  • Emergency Transfer Relay: An Emergency Transfer Relay (ETR) feature allows emergency calls even in the event of power ailure.
  • Remote Deployment and Management: The G250 is easily installed and remotely configured by a central support staff, allowing the enterprise to get branch offices operational quickly and cost-effectively.
Features:

Combined LAN, WAN, and Telephony
In a single box, the G250 can provide all the LAN, WAN, and telephony functions for a small branch location.

A single box solution provides a lower total cost solution initially, as well as having fewer disparate components to manage and maintain. The LAN and WAN Ethernet ports on the G250, however, can connect to already existing LAN switches and WAN routers.

Standard Local Survivability
Basic telephony is provided to local branch employees if the G250 connection back to the Avaya Media Server is lost for any reason, such as a break in the WAN service.

Local branch employees are not left without communicatons in the event that there is a problem with the WAN, allowing them to at least receive and make calls locally.

Automatic alternate Media Gateway Connection
This important branch survivability feature allows the G250 to try and connect to one of up to 10 alternate Media Gateway Controller (MGC) in the event the connection to the primary MGD is lost.

A network problem is often isolated while other parts of the network are fully funtional. This feature keeps the system functioning with 100% Avaya Communication Manager features by connecting up to another MGC.

Modem Dial Back-up
This feature provides a way to reconnect to the centrally located Avaya Media Server if the primary connection is lost by automatically dialing out over a modem to re-establish the connection.

When a WAN connection is lost to a branch location, this provides an alternative means to reconnect to the centralized Avaya Media Server.

Local Survivable Processor (LSP) Support
An Avaya S8300 Media Processor can optionally be installed in the G250 gateway as a Local Survivable Processor to provide 100% Avaya Communication Manager features if all connections to the central location is lost.

As an optional feature, only branch locations requiring this level of survivability need to have a Local Survivable Processor installed.

WAN Routing Capabilities
The G250 gateway provides WAN routing capabilities that enhances performance, increases security, and supports Voice over IP (VoIP) Quality of Service (QoS).

Bandwidth is often more limited on WAN connections, which makes the RTP header compression, enhanced VPN support, and other G250 WAN routing capabilities invaluable in helping to ensure a secure, quality WAN operation.

Call Preserving Fail-over
Most existing call connections are preserved (not dropped) if the connection from the gateway to the centralized Avaya Media Server is lost.

Branch employees that are already connected when a fail-over occurs will not be dropped, allowing them to finish their conversation.
